Here is a message forwarded by the listserv from our wonderful Department Chair, David Lumsden:
Dear New & Continuing Anthropology Undergrad. Members:
It is a great pleasure and honour -as one of my first major duties as the new
Chair of our Anthropology Department, to Welcome you or to Welcome you back, to
York Anthropology, and to wish you every success during this school year, and
for your future as well. This year is a special one for our university -it’s
York’s 50th Anniversary Year, and you are a vital part of it.
On July llth/08, I had the memorable experience of attending the ASA’s ‘Anthro
Rocks! Charity Gala’, held in a downtown pub -my Congratulations to all those
who organized that event and to all those who attended it, who applauded the
performers, went for the doorprizes and cupcakes, who dressed to the nines and
enjoyed themselves -and who raised the significant sum of $400.00 for donation
to Habitat for Humanity. Bravo! That’s helping make Anthropology count in and
for the wider community.
And outbreaks of ethnocentrism and misunderstanding in that community and wider
world remind us that there continues to be an important role for Anthropology
-for you, in helping to combat ethnocentrism, stigma, and inter-ethnic and
inter-religious tensions in our common world and common future.
I very much hope that the Anthropology Students Association will organize as
soon as possible for the new school year, I also look forward to participating
in a Pizza Meet & Greet with you in the near future -stay tuned for that. I
remind you all that there is a seat for the ASA President or representative at
our regular Departmental Meetings -and your advice and ideas regarding our
Department are always welcome (contact me in 2054 vari Hall; X77787, or by
email at lumsden@yorku.ca). Further, I expect the January term to see the start
of our next, formal Undergraduate Program Review -in which your views and voices
have an explicit and key role to play. So do be active with the ASA this year,
together.
and all best wishes, from
David Lumsden,
Chair of Anthropology.
